Every Autobot has a purpose, be it as a leader, a warrior, a healer, or a scout. Smokescreen's purpose, however, is to charm and deceive. His job is to conceal the Autobots' true mission and lead the enemy astray, and he's not above flat-out cheating to get the job done. Off the battlefield, he uses his naturally friendly and sociable nature to get in close with his Autobot comrades... then reports back to Optimus Prime, giving the Autobot leader an on-the-ground perspective on what his troops are thinking.
Smokescreen's armaments are similar to his tactics. If he can't out-think, charm, or just plain outrun you, he'll surround you with a magnetized cloud of smoke, and blast you with his circuit-scrambling weapons while you're stumbling around blindly. In car mode, Smokescreen can emit from his tailpipe a thick, black cloud of smoke that has the additional property of gravitating toward metallic objects, such as enemy Decepticons. In robot mode, his twin shoulder-mounted launchers shoot missiles that shatter into thousands of shards that produce a variety of radio signals, magnetic fields and infrared waves, wreaking havoc on the radar and guidance systems of enemy aircraft. His disruptor rifle shoots a web of electrical energy that can short out and interfere with the proper operation of any electrically powered target.
With proper shielding, an opponent can successfully withstand many of Smokescreen's weapons, usually leaving him in a relatively weak position since he's not that powerful on his own.
Smokescreen arrived on Earth during the initial impact of the Ark into the planet. He had been present when the Ark crashed onto prehistoric Earth during the encounter wih the Nemesis, but due to being in the more heavily-damaged Ark below-decks, he was not recovered and repaired for almost a year.
Smokescreen was the only Autobot who survived Bosch's attempt at imprisonment, and was able to work with the alien in winning back the freedom of Optimus Prime, Perceptor, and Bumblebee, who were being held for ransom.
Smokescreen operates out of the Ark, and reports to Jazz and Prowl.
Smokescreen transforms into a Electramotive Racing #38 Datsun 280ZX Turbo.
