One of the universals across all Transformers continuities has been the use of insignia to differentiate members of respective armies, and sometimes sub-factions within armies or even individuals. This was sometimes used as a tactical advantage when Transformers would temporarily wear the symbol of the opposite faction to fool their opponents.

Wheeljack reawakened the Dinobots and told them to go help their friends. They reluctantly agreed and flew off after them. MUX History[]
When Primus Pilus Megatron returned from his trip to the Hub, many Decepticons started wearing a new logo to demonstrate their renewed commitment to him, as opposed to the Decepticons who remained under Starscream's command.

Similarly, when Optimus Prime lost the Matrix and a small faction of Autobots abandoned the main faction, they, too, adopted a new symbol.
