Place of birth: Krakow, Poland
Family: Daughter of a musician and a seamstress. In 1903, Married Clarence Witwicky, a journalist and gambler, at age 15, and moved to the United States. They had two sons, Jeremiah and Maryan. Divorced Witwicky in 1905 and married Karol Chlapowski, a Polish nobleman and political activist, in 1909. They moved back to Poland and had one son, Ralph. Education: Studied drama and music in Krakow and Warsaw. Made her stage debut in 1909.
Career: Became a leading actress in Poland, performing in Shakespearean and classical roles. Emigrated back to the United States in 1916 with her husband and friends, hoping to establish a utopian colony in California. The colony failed, but Modjeska continued her acting career, touring the country and earning acclaim for her performances. She became a naturalized citizen in 1923. She returned to Poland several times, supporting the independence movement, and appearing in patriotic plays. She also performed in England and France, where she was honored by the governments and the public. She retired from the stage in 1955, after a farewell tour of the United States.
Personal life: Modjeska was a cultured and generous woman, who supported various causes, such as women's rights, education, and animal welfare. She was friends with many prominent figures, such as Mark Twain, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and Susan B. Anthony. She was also a devoted mother and grandmother, who cherished her family.
Death: Modjeska died of Bright's disease on April 8, 1957, at her home in Newport Beach, California. She was 69 years old. She was buried in Krakow, next to her second husband and son.
Legacy: Modjeska is considered one of the greatest actresses of the 19th century, and a pioneer of American theater. She is remembered for her artistic excellence, her humanitarianism, and her patriotism. She has been honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, a statue in Krakow, and a postage stamp in Poland. Several places in California are named after her, such as Modjeska Canyon, Modjeska Peak, and Modjeska House.
