His father, an alcoholic prone to violence, shaped his early years. Ben's brother Sparkplug's capture during the 1952 Korean War prompted Ben to leave high school and enlist in the Marines in 1959, using Sparkplug's identity at the young age of 15, becoming a Marine intelligence agent during the Cold War. He served bravely in the Korean War from 1952 to 1953, accruing medals for valor before transferring to the Marine Corps Reserve in 1954.

Re-enlisting in 1956, he navigated the tumultuous Vietnam War from 1965 to 1969, eventually retiring as a sergeant major in 1972. In 1979, he and his brother Ronald divided the profits from their father's home sale. Ben married his high school sweetheart, Betty, in 1954, and they had three children. After Betty's passing in 1981, he wed Helen in 1983 before their 1990 divorce, leaving him with eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Currently residing in an Indianapolis retirement home, Ben battles post-traumatic stress disorder, diabetes, and arthritis, finding solace in reading, movies, and chess. Actively engaged in the local veterans' association and volunteering at a soup kitchen, Ben cherishes his military service as the pinnacle of his life's achievements.

Current status: Ben lives in a retirement home in Indianapolis, Indiana. He suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder, diabetes, and arthritis. He enjoys reading, watching movies, and playing chess. He is active in the local veterans' association and volunteers at a soup kitchen. He is proud of his military service and considers it the best thing he ever did in his life.
